Now THAT would not be a bad thing, even if it meant that a Linux-based OS would break compatibility with Win32/Win64 apps.
If Microsoft went down that road it would have to develop Office for Linux, it could encourage other companies to do the same and "fork" a new path forward. Everyone who would want to still use Win32/Win64 apps would stick with Windows 10. Everyone who would like a more secure, performant environment would gradually migrate to the Unix/Windows one.
Give it a few years and the latter could really become a viable option. But then nobody would be buying new PCs, which was the point all along, so...
